Calgary, the fastest-growing city in Canada, has a population now exceeding 1.5 million, up from 1.28 million in 2019. This rapid growth, driven by international and interprovincial migration, has led to challenges like housing affordability, urban sprawl, and increased demand for public services. In response, the city has developed long-term strategies to address these issues.
Mayor Jyoti Gondek emphasizes that planning for the future, through strategies like the 30-year public transit plan and the 25-year GamePLAN for recreation facilities, is crucial for "future-proofing" the city. Calgary is also tackling its housing crisis with a seven-year strategy that aims to boost both market and affordable housing by 2030.
Despite challenges, Calgary remains an attractive city, ranked the most livable in North America in 2024. To address safety concerns, the city has invested in improving public safety and addressing crime through enhanced transit security and community-focused strategies.
The city is also working on the Calgary Plan, a comprehensive document to guide growth and land-use over the next 30 years, although its rollout has been delayed until 2026. This plan will help manage Calgary’s growth, ensure affordability, and enhance livability as the city continues to expand.
