Applications Now Open
The Alberta government is offering a $5,000 moving bonus to skilled tradespeople who relocated to the province between May 1 and December 31, 2024. This incentive is part of the “Alberta is Calling” campaign and aims to offset moving costs for up to 2,000 workers in eligible occupations, such as aircraft mechanics and construction laborers. To qualify, applicants must be full-time workers, Canadian citizens or permanent residents.
Workforce Shortages Persist
Despite the introduction of the moving bonus, Alberta continues to face a shortage of skilled trades workers. Business Council of Alberta president Adam Legge highlighted that nearly every industry is struggling to fill positions, with an estimated 700,000 trades retirements expected across Canada by 2028. The shortage is driving up competition for skilled workers.
Incentive Programs and Future Needs
The incentive program is seen as a positive step, but industry leaders are calling for more extensive measures. Bill Black, president of the Calgary Construction Association, stated that the bonus alone will not resolve the issue. He urged for more involvement from industries in developing long-term solutions to the workforce shortage.
Additional Efforts
The Alberta government is also focusing on expanding apprenticeship programs, fast-tracking foreign credential recognition, and investing in training grants for skilled workers. Despite progress, more comprehensive strategies are needed to address ongoing workforce gaps.
